Chilblains, a health problem associated with the winter cold

Winter is usually associated with many diseases that affect the respiratory tract, such as colds, pharyngitis, flu, derived most of the cold and humidity.

But the seasonal change also causes the appearance of other health problems, perhaps less common, but very annoying, such as chilblains.

In reality, the chilblain is an inflammation of various areas of the body, specifically the most peripheral, caused by poor blood circulation. It mainly affects feet, hands, nose and ears.   It is a painful inflammation, and it can also present cracks or ulcers in the skin.

Why chilblains appear

  • Chilblains are typical of cold times, since low temperatures reduce blood circulation, the most remote and exposed areas of the body being more affected. Humidity also favors the appearance of these inflammations by sensitizing the skin.
  • But there are other factors that can cause its appearance, such as sedentary lifestyles or tobacco use, which affects blood circulation due to the vasoconstrictor effect of nicotine.

How to treat chilblains

  • The best treatment against chilblains is to prevent them from appearing. To do this, experts recommend using appropriate clothing and footwear in the coldest times, which also insulate from moisture.
  • It is also advisable to prevent physical exercise, lead a healthy life with a good diet, which includes the consumption of vitamins A and E, and avoid tobacco.
  • Once the chilblain has appeared, pain and itching can be relieved using vasodilator creams. In addition, it is favorable to take baths in hot water in the affected areas and give regular massages to promote blood circulation.
  • In general, chilblains disappear within a few weeks, but if the problem persists or worsens, causing skin ulceration or bleeding, a specialist should be seen.
