Sugary drinks can be deadly. This has been demonstrated by a study from Harvard University published in the Congress of the National Heart Association of the United States.
According to data, drinks with high sugar concentrations cause 184,000 deaths worldwide in 2010, of which 78% occurred in developing or low-income countries.
Diabetes and heart attacks from sugary drinks
- The investigation determined that the main causes of death derived from the consumption of these products were due to diabetes, a total of 132,000 deaths in that year.
- Behind this pathology are cardiovascular diseases, 44,000 cases, and cancers derived from obesity and overweight, around 6,000. All of them come from the increase in body mass index due to the high sugar content.
Sugary drinks around the world
- The data varies considerably depending on the data from the 144 countries studied. The most affected region is Mexico, where, according to experts, in 2010 24,000 people died from ailments derived from the consumption of sugary drinks, mainly due to diabetes.
- The American continent leads the ranking in mortality rate with 63,000 people, followed by Asia and Europe with 11,000 fatal cases. In addition, there is a very marked difference in the consumption of soft drinks between the different nations and the ages and sex of the population, with a maximum of five drinks per day in a young Cuban.
